Dr. Siopsis and his students are working in the rapidly developing subject of black holes and other extended objects in string theory. Despite its shortcomings, string theory is still the only viable quantum theory of gravity. Recent results on black holes, D-branes, etc. [1] are very exciting, having considerably advanced our understanding of quantum aspects of gravity such as Hawking radiation and information loss. Their cosmological implications are currently under intense investigation.
