CHAPTER 6
Work and energy

NEW CONCEPTS

FORMULAS

Work:

\begin{displaymath}W = Fd\cos\theta\end{displaymath}

Kinetic energy:

\begin{displaymath}{\rm KE} = {1\over 2} mv^2\end{displaymath}

Gravitational potential energy:

\begin{displaymath}{\rm PE}_{grav} = mgy\end{displaymath}

Work-energy principle:

\begin{displaymath}W = \Delta ({\rm KE}) = {1\over 2} mv_2^2 - {1\over 2} mv_1^2\end{displaymath}

Law of conservation of energy:

\begin{displaymath}{\rm KE} + {\rm PE} = {\rm constant}\end{displaymath}

Power:

\begin{displaymath}P = {\Delta W\over \Delta t}\end{displaymath}
