CHAPTER 13
Temperature and kinetic theory

NEW CONCEPTS

FORMULAS

Linear expansion:

\begin{displaymath}\Delta L = \alpha L_0\Delta T\end{displaymath}

where $\alpha$ is the coefficient of linear expansion.

Volume expansion:

\begin{displaymath}\Delta V = \beta V_0\Delta T\end{displaymath}

where $\beta$ is the coefficient of volume expansion. For solids: $\beta \approx 3\alpha$.

Ideal gas:

PV = nRT = NkT

where $R = kN_A = 8.315~J/mol\cdot K$, n: number of moles, N: number of molecules.

Average kinetic energy of molecules in gas:

\begin{displaymath}\overline{\rm KE} = {3\over 2} kT\end{displaymath}
